श्री कृष्ण जन्मास्टमी – Sri Krishna Janmastami

Krishna mandir Patan Nepal on Krishna astami

श्री कृष्ण जन्मास्टमी – Sri Krishn Janmastami, is the birthday of lord Sri Krishna.  This day is celebrated by all Hindus in Nepal, India and the rest of the world.  On the midnight of the eighth day of the lunar dark fortnight (Krishnapakchha) in Bhadra (August/Sept), Lord Krishna was born to father, Basudev and mother, Devaki in a jail of King Kamsa of Mathura. Kamsa imprisoned his sister Devaki and brother-in-law Basudev believing the words of an ascetic that foretold that the eighth son of Devaki would kill Kamsa.

Basudev took the eighth child to Gokul and swapped with the girl child born there. Basudev lost the memory of his activities after reaching the jail.

Kamsa holding the legs of the child and circling her in the air wanted to slam her on the prison wall, but the girl slipped away from his hand, and said, “Kamsa, a boy born in Gokul will kill you.”  As predicted, ultimately Krishna Killed Kamsa.

Krishna is believed to be the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu that frequently comes down to earth in different incarnations for freeing the common folks from the evil spirits.

To celebrate the birthday of Lord Krishna, Nepalis visit the shrines of Krishna all over Nepal, similarly, a large number of devotees line up at the Krishna Mandir in Lalitpur from the early morning to the night to worship and make offerings to the baby Krishna (Bal Krishna) in bronze idols.
